Prince of Cats
Original painting by Spiros Gelekas.
Inspired by one of the earliest mythological forms connected to Sauron in Tolkien’s evolving legendarium, Prince of Cats draws from the shadow of Tevildo - the sinister feline prince appearing in the earliest versions of Beren and Lúthien.
Rather than illustrating the character directly, the painting approaches the figure symbolically: emerging through mist, silence, and fragmented form as an ancient predatory spirit suspended between beast and shadow.
The restrained palette and minimal composition emphasize atmosphere over narrative, allowing the figure to exist almost like a forgotten memory from the earliest layers of Tolkien’s mythology.
Both elegant and unsettling, the work explores themes of hidden power, transformation, and the primal nature of fear concealed beneath beauty and silence.
Acrylic on canvas board, 40x30cm.
