Thinking Through Arts

"Thinking Through Arts" - International Contemporary Art Exhibition is an international contemporary art exhibition hosted by the Huangpu District Cultural Master-Studio "Sun Jie Studio", the Institute for Arts and Creative Industries, and co-hosted by the Guangzhou Huangpu Library and the Guangzhou Huangpu District Fashion Culture Association. The exhibition was directed by Professor Sun Jie as the academic chair,  Mr.Liu Mengzhu, the executive director of the Institute for Arts and Creative Industries, as the exhibition director, and Ms. Chen Nimin, as the curator. At the same time, this exhibition is also a response to the national strategy of "reinvigorating and developing China through human resource development", realizing the high-quality development of Huangpu culture and art driven by international cultural and artistic celebrities. This exhibition brings together more than 60 pieces of works created by many important artists active in the contemporary art stage, which shows the changes and development of international contemporary art.

The exhibition displays more than 80 pieces of works created by groups of important artists active in the contemporary art stage, showing the changes and development of international contemporary art in recent years from different aspects, and also trying to present the thoughts from these artists and their interaction with contemporary art and social situations they have experienced. Just as Foucault, a French philosopher, once proposed the concept of "heterotopia", contemporary art is the diversified presentation and development of traditional art, and it is also a means for artists to think and express themselves. The exhibition summarizes and describes the artist's personal living experience from a more implicit and ambiguous perspective. This experience refers to both their daily life scenes and their understanding of life and beauty. We can experience the artists' aesthetics, emotions, wishes, imagination and impulses, as well as their confusion and doubts through their works. This spiritual factor is brought by the modernity of social development, and it is also a thinking way that is transmitted through the beauty of art.

Kaleidoscope group exhibition

The Attic Gallery is proud to present the group exhibition, KALEIDOSCOPE, featuring 17 artists from around Greece exploring what it is to be an artist in modern-day Greece and offering visitors a journey into modern Greek art.

Greece has seen its fair share of drama in recent years, but this has also led to a rich evolution of the art scene across the country. While each individual artist follows their own path, whether abstract or figurative, surreal or minimalist, each reflects aspects of their environment and provides a snapshot that records this period in modern Greek art. The common thread running through this deliberately diverse collection of paintings is the untamed creative vision that provides insight into the Greek experience.

The theme for KALEIDOSCOPE and the selection of featured artists draws on this idea and explores the many facets of this snapshot. Deriving from the Greek “kalos (good) + eidos (object) + scopeo (to view),” the word kaleidoscope means “observation of beautiful forms.” The object itself produces shimmering, symmetrical, and infinite shapes of curiosity and beauty that reflect our own interpretations of them.

The intent of this exhibition is to present a literal kaleidoscope of art and artists that reflects the many faces of Greek reality, seen through the richness, playfulness, darkness and imagination of each artist. The images, styles, and themes are as varied as the artists themselves, united by a key thread: they are working in Greece, in the here and now, and the diversity of their work reflects the diversity of their experience.

The featured artists are drawn from across the country and represent a broad age-range. All are currently active artists. This exhibition includes romance, nostalgia, and beauty; there is also darkness, melancholy, and challenge. There is a rejoicing in the natural elements and there are philosophical visual commentaries. Some artists reach to the past; others imagine a dystopian, or an Edenic future. One can guess at the origins of many artists from their choice of subject and their brush-strokes: urban grit and decay are represented here, alongside open fields and turbulent seas. Mythical references are never far away, and the strong surrealist tradition running through modern Greek art makes its presence felt. Materials and surfaces range from the traditional to the experimental, with coffee grounds, wooden lasts, and rice paper miniatures standing alongside vast dreamscapes and pointillist illustrations.

Each artist tells a story that calls the visitor deeper into the modern, mythical labyrinth that is Greece, and there is something here for everyone. This exhibition is an invitation into a dialogue and a journey of discovery: the artists have done their work, and we now invite visitors to gaze through the eyepiece of the kaleidoscope and discover an infinitely varied, truly modern and truly Greek view of the world.

In Beijing next to Salvador Dali

I came across Dali’s work at the age of sixteen. By then I didn’t know much about art in general, even though I possessed the natural gift of painting since the early stages of my life. Around the age of twelve I began painting on sketchbooks my very first “fantasy” sketches, some of which I have mastered on canvas and to present are travelling around the globe. However, for that to become real, 20 plus years have gone by. The story is as follows:

During that period of time I was studying whatever I could find regarding magazines, press and cyclopedias, since the World Wide Web and its conveniences did not exist. I had already been impressed by the details and credibility all classical artists had rendered, however I was in searching of something even bigger than that.

I was eager to find artworks which would join images or artifacts not necessarily connected in a logical manner, but would have to do with the subject of dreams. At some point I came across Dali’s “Temptation of Saint Anthony”. I was so much thrilled that I began searching everything about him.

I started reading about his life, his work, his intense and eccentric personality. I can recall, at some point I was able to name each and every one of his works. I tried to get in touch with his techniques, but that was, at the time, a goal too hard to reach. My everyday life and routine, school, social relationships and the needs of other people did not leave me with the time actually needed to accomplish that dream. In 2002 I was proposed to participate in a group art exhibition in Corfu, during which I tried my best to demonstrate artworks in which however the element of surrealism I admired in Dali was missing.

Although my work was in total sold, I personally was disappointed by the lack of surrealism it delivered. I convinced myself I could never be a professional artist. So for the years to come I was occupied and involved only with decoration, plus from time to time I created some frescoes and rarely an artwork for the needs of a specific project. But I was really suffering and drowning inside. Each and every year passed helped my obsession over creating art grow and become more imperative. In 2014 I found and retrieved my childhood sketches and began to practice on a daily basis until I could find the fashion of delivering them realistically. The next year I announced that I would stop working as a decorator and I practically sealed myself off of the rest of the world, in my atelier, creating and painting night and day.

In 2016 I presented my very first exhibition which included artworks deriving from fantasy worlds and realism falling within surrealism, at the Municipal Corfu Theater. My work was embraced by the best criticism and since then are travelling around the globe on scheduled exhibitions in Greece and abroad.

One of them will be in Beijing, in the heart of Asian culture, aside the artistic giant called Salvador Dali. An exhibition designed and presented by the M02art Company, holding all of the respect not only for Dali, but for my dreams as well.

As for the differences between Dali and myself, one could obviously find a lot, since it is not possible for someone to get close to such a prominent and tremendous artist. Maybe the anarchy and the monarchy on a metaphysical level. What may link me with Dali is the struggle to deliver works that will stay alive in history.

First solo exhibition "Fantasy Landscapes"

The works of the young talented painter Spiros Gelekas will be presented in the Painting exhibition that will take place in the foyer of the Municipal Theater of Corfu.

Spiros Gelekas presents for the very first time to the public of Corfu his works entitled "Fantasy Landscapes". A work that justifiably ranks him among the surrealists of the genre!

Freedom of expression, the liberation of the imagination in the absence of any control over logic, the absolute opposition to non-conformity, are the elements that move the artist's hand, without any element of self-censorship or moral and aesthetic restraint, thus achieving the creation of irrational and imaginary images, without necessarily a logical connection between them.

The exhibition will run from Thursday 1 to Tuesday 13 December and will be open to the public daily from 10:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 21:00.

The Board of the Association of Vraganiotika, which supports the whole project, invites the people of Corfu to honor with their presence the remarkable effort, which promises much more in the near future.

International visual artist Spiros Gelekas returns to China, this time with his first solo exhibition "Everything in Hope Mansion is Beyond Imagination" organized by Hope Mansion (real estate) and the art company Mo2art in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, also known for the famous Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. The exhibition will last from November 18 to 26.

Let us recall that the journey to Asia for the visual artist began in 2018 with his participation in the Foshan Art Fair festival in Foshan. In the same year, three more exhibitions followed in Beijing,

Kunming and Dongxiang next to works by Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso with the highlight being that of Beijing.

Followed by three representations of Greece 2020-22 with a greater emphasis of the International Watercolor Art Exhibition at the Guangzhou Art Museum as it was selected by the state committee among the elite of 170 artists.

Spiros Gelekas has a long-term contract since 2017 with the International Artists Exchange Association (IAC) and Mo2art.

Ted Nasmith's review

"Possible the most prolific of this group of artists is Corfu-born Spiros Gelekas of Greece. He is certainly the most high spirited and, like the others here has long been a devotee to Tolkien. In his artistic world spontaneity and intuition play primary roles, he says, and overall I don't think I've encountered someone so singularly immersed and playfully wry about his powerful very graphic fantasy images. His life has been devoted to practicing his craft, influenced he says, by the great masters of classical art, as well as by the masters of surrealism, through which he has developed a highly idiosyncratic style. His body of Tolkien art is not to be judged for its basic depictions but as more of mystical interface between the everyday world and dream realms as he describes it."

New book on echoes of ancient Greek literature in Tolkien’s work translating previous scholarship into Modern Greek for the first time.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy literature, best-known from The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, was influenced by Northern European myth and folklore (e.g. the Old English poem Beowulf, the Icelandic Eddas, and the Finnish Kalevala). Nevertheless, Tolkien’s original course of study at the University of Oxford was “Greats” (i.e. Classics), and he was familiar with a wealth of Greek and Latin literature. Greek literature played an equally important part in his creative writing, though it remains a less-studied element of his inspirations. Despite a corpus of scholarship on Tolkien’s creative reuse of classical Greek texts and myths in his Middle-earth mythology, there is hardly any bibliography on this subject in the Greek language. This volume will fill this gap, aiming to open an academic debate on Tolkien’s Greek inter texts, for the first time in the Greek language and academia. Our volume collects scholarly articles and essays, originally published in English in different journals and edited collections, translated into modern Greek. They include essays by Miryam Libran-Moreno, Dimitra Fimi, Gergely Nagy, and Michael Livingston, among many others (see full table of contents below). The volume focuses on Tolkien’s best-known works (The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion) and their inter-textual dialogue with the Homeric epics, Platonic philosophy, and the myths that inspired classical tragedy.

The book cover will be created by Greek Tolkien artist Spiros Gelekas who also kindly allowed us to reproduce his work titled “Fields of the White City” for the project image.

Surrealist master Dali & Spiros works group exhibition

In 1922, within the art of Dada, there was a surrealism (French: Surréalisme), a modern school that had a great influence on Europe and the United States. Surrealism clearly emphasizes that the acceptance control and the reality dominated by logic are not true. Only the combination of dream and reality is absolute truth and absolute objectivity. Therefore, it advocates abandoning the realistic image based on logical and orderly experience and memory, and presents the image world in the deep psychology of human beings, trying to integrate the concept of reality with the experience of instinct, sub consciousness and dream. Surrealist artists include Miro, Dali, Ernst, Magritte, and Spiros.

In this surrealist art exhibition, we selected the works of Dali and Spiros from a number of surrealist artists:

Surrealist master Salvador Dali, together with Picasso, Matisse is considered to be the most representative of the 20th century painters.

Spiros Gelekas’s surrealist paintings are contemporary potential art. His work has been collected by the International Association of Artists, the Corfu Art Museum, and famous musicians, photographers, art collectors, etc. in Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

The works of the two masters focus on the transcendentally of human beings, and are committed to breaking through the realistic view of logical and physical worlds, trying to combine realistic concepts with instinct, subconscious and dream experiences to achieve an absolute or transcendental real situation. The occasional and absurd content, the spiritual shock is "disturbing", however, this strange conflict and clear breath between the images makes people feel a magical and special charm. This is in line with the Chinese ancients' emphasis on the status of “beyond the Surface, won in obtaining”. The artistic effect of surrealist painting lies in the proper blending of abstraction and figuration, and the balance between the two is achieved. In the treatment of "virtual" and "real", the "virtual" part is the place where the two masters' imaginations fly and show their charm.

Dali and Spiros used the surrealist works to interpret the vision of “making life better”, so the choice of exhibition space has become our invisible pressure. We are looking for a display space that matches the character of their works. After the comparison of many excellent surrealist paintings, we selected a piece of Qianling Mountain and the Qinglong Lake in the west. Without deliberate carving, we can have a comfortable and pleasant display environment. The Qinglong Lake and the mountains and rivers have been the place where the emperors will be together, the literati gather, and the ancient temples are chosen. The Yuanmingyuan and the Summer Palace in the Ming and Qing Dynasties are royal gardens and summer resorts. Here, I feel the sustenance of the souls of the two masters, Salvador Dali and Spiros Gelekas, through the display of surrealist art, in a poetic space, dreams and reality. Unity, this way of expression makes people realize the existence of the master's mind.

The two masters often use the "impact" technique in their creations to create the most exciting and dramatic works of art, forcing people to look at things that are commonplace. Just like the spirit of Vanke, with the regional character of Qinglong Lake landscape painting, we will create a classical, modern, exquisite and natural high-end lakeside ecological villa area here, and enjoy the interest of Quanlin in the city. The multiple gardens and urban planning of the Garden Pavilion once again re-enact the aesthetics of poetic life in Jiangnan, and then inspired by the texture of Jiangnan City Square, breaking the gap between the community and the scenery, blending the taste of tradition and modernity, creating poetry between the lakes and mountains. Jiangnan. Vanke's life “artist” creates a kind of reality and delusion in the illusion or dream of people's minds. The combination of concrete and abstract “surreal realm” makes us amazed and admired.

Fall in love with painting, then fall in love with poetry and fall in love with nature. Pay tribute to a better life in the future!

Dreams in the Ocean

The Corfiot painter Spiros Gelekas presents his third solo exhibition of painting entitled "Dreams in the Ocean", in the welcoming space of Puppet.

After the imaginative and surreal landscapes with which he dealt in his previous works, in this exhibition the central theme are the sailing ships. Sometimes they are in stormy seas or in mysterious landscapes,

Sometimes they are presented as fighters or with a sense of melancholy, but in any case the sailboats of Spiros Gelekas retain a fairytale dimension, as he has become accustomed to from his previous works. Nevertheless, we observe that the artist chose to move in a different artistic path, painting almost exclusively with a spatula.

Drawing Contest "Neon Skylines" - Top Ten Entries

A while ago, I think it was the end of June, Faber-Castell had a great competition called "Neon Skylines" where you basically could draw any skyline, from any city, it just had to be in neon colors. They don't have the competition brief on their site anymore, but basically it was: neon, no larger than an A4, handmade (not digital) and they were looking to be original and as catchy as you could.

And so I said to myself I should have my fun, although I wasn’t a professional artist until then, but I wanted to give a try.

I did this drawing for London included the "neon" elements, so this is what came out of it, as posted by Faber-Castell on their

page and I won the 9th place as for the contest was a top-ten winners. Could not believe it, and this is one of the reasons I pushed myself the next years to evolve my technique and looking forward.
